Maintenance Engineer Salaries in Rugby
As part of our salary research in Warwickshire, I’ve taken a deep dive into a couple of areas. First was Coventry, and next is how much maintenance engineers can earn in Rugby.
Between April and September, we analysed 150 adverts in Rugby. Below are the areas I share my expertise as an Engineering Recruitment Consultant in the area:
Again, these are advertised roles. So, the average could be a lot higher – as engineers are typically on more. But let’s find out what engineers can earn.
Overview of area: £50,750
Looking at Coventry as a whole, the average increased by a whopping 18.5%. This is a fantastic i
Rugby saw an 18% increase across the 150 adverts we reviewed. With salaries ranging between £43,500 – £56,000.
Not surprised by the average at all. With the bigger companies in the area, it’s not unexpected. Especially as these companies typically offer shifts, which do pay more. This area is very competitive, lots of 4 on 4 off, lots of 12 hours.
Also, there’s 5 or 6 companies that have 50-90 engineer on their team. Even in Crick, you’ve got a new Royal Mail site that’s had a huge recruitment drive this year. So, you’ll struggle to find engineers with a salary of less than £50k.
Rugby is unique as it’s well-connected. Being on the east side of Warwickshire engineers can easily get to Northamptonshire. So, they have a lot of opportunities. It makes the area really competitive which is another reason why the average is high.
Electrical Maintenance Engineer – £48,750
Old Average – £41,427
New Average – £48,750
(17% increase)
An average of £48,750 isn’t too bad for Electrical Maintenance Engineers. But if you are paying this for a shift you are going to struggle. Especially as 33% of the roles we found were electrical only – it’s pretty competitive.
Shift engineers are really looking for above £50,000 for a basic. Some do pay this, with a range of £46,000 – £51,500.
There is some room for companies to stand out with their salary. As a result, this salary will definitely increase next time.
Mechanical Maintenance Engineer – £52,000
Old Average – £40,967
Days Average – £52,000
(26% increase)
To be honest, I’m unsurprised by the 2% increase in jobs asking for this skill set. As it isn’t as in demand as it used to be.
Also, I don’t know of many companies in Rugby that split their teams based on Bias. So what is interesting about an average of £52,000 is that it’s so much more than electrical. Especially as only 21% of roles wanted this bias.
If I had to hazard a guess, it’ll be due to companies now paying engineers the same regardless of bias. So, I’d expect this average to either stay the same or slightly decrease when we next come to do the research.
Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer – £52,500
Old Average – £44,637
New Average – £52,500
(17% increase)
Huge increase! But it’s where it needs to be at Rugby. An average of £52,500 just reflects how competitive the market is. Within Rugby, there is so much industry that engineers have the pick of the bunch. So if your salary isn’t where it needs to be you’ll struggle to attract engineers.
This time 38% of roles wanted this bias, which just goes to show how competitive the market is for this skillset. Our full report breaks this down further – so make sure to download this!
How does Pay Vary by Industry?
Rugby has a lot of industries. So, let’s look at how pay varies based on the sector engineers work.
Manufacturing
£50,000
(37% of roles were within this industry)
FMCG
£50,500
(28% of roles were within this industry)
Heavy Industry
£49,000
(15% of roles were within this industry)
Distribution
£51,500
(18% of roles were within this industry)
Automotive
£54,000
(10% of roles were within this industry)
All of these are where I would expect salaries to be within these industries. To pick out a couple of interesting points.
- Heavy industry has a strong emphasis on health and safety due to the environment and machinery. So, companies tend to compensate for this.
- Automotive does seem high for the area. This is probably due to companies like Aston Martin offering insane salaries for 3 shifts (see more about this below!)
Really, engineers have the pick in Rugby as there is so much industry. It’s also got good transport links. As a result, the package you offer engineers needs to be competitive, otherwise, you’ll struggle.
What do the Shifts Pay Engineers?
Let’s investigate what the different shifts pay engineers in Rugby. Again, I’ve just focussed on a few key ones I see. If you want others, check out the full guide.
Day Shifts pay an average of £44,000
Day shifts tend to not vary across the region. So, I’m unsurprised that the average salary was £44,000. That being said, it is a shift where people will look about more. So if you can uplift your wage, it’ll be a big help!
I do find that the companies that offer day shifts (which tend to be smaller SME’s) do spilt their teams. Which was supported by the biases we found- which I included below as it is interesting. This is most likely because it’s smaller businesses don’t have the capacity to support a shift rota and pay
4 on 4 off shifts pay an average of £54,000
This is spot on for Rugby. 4 on 4 off paying an average of £54,000 is the new norm. With the big Royal Mail site in Crick paying big bucks for their engineers. Companies in Rugby have had to adapt to remain competitive, which has happened as salaries ranged between £52,000 – £56,000.

Rotating Shift pays an average of £47,500
Again don’t have much to do with rotating. But this seems like a good wage to cover the unsocial hours this shift has. Might have more to comment on it next time!
Panama Shift pays an average of £48,500
More companies do 4 on 4 off, as this is the preferred shift in the area. If you’re benchmarking, you can’t get away with paying less than £47,000. Need to match the 4 on 4 off for this salary otherwise, you’ll struggle. Especially as the rotation I see in the area is 12-hour days and nights.
3 Shift pays an average of £43,000
I don’t typically work with 3 shifts. But this is a good rate for a shift. Again, you need to compete with 4 on 4 off if you’re benchmarking. On average, 3 shifts paid between £45,000 – £49,000. So, it’s not quite on the level of 4 on 4 off.
Double Days pays an average of £45,000
Most of the shifts I work on in the area are 4 on 4 off. So, I don’t have too many insights into this salary. But it is a decent wage for this and salaries ranged between £43,000 – £47,000, although I see this increase next time.
What’s next for Salaries in Rugby?
It’s great to see that most companies are now hitting the minimum expectations of engineers. As this will
All of these averages are where I thought they would be – which is great!
Rugby is wildly competitive for engineers. So, I really see these averages increasing during our next research. But it won’t be too much higher, as the big companies who were recruiting over the past 6 months have stopped.
It’ll also take the smaller SMEs a while to catch up, due to budget constraints. But I do think that the gap will narrow.
